Awards given for examplary service Three lay people, a deacon and a priest received special recognition at the 146th annual diocesan convention Oct. 14. Each received a special award that is given when the diocese gathers annually.
Archdeacons’ award This award recognizing an outstanding deacon was given to Deacon John Heckert of Grace, Ottawa. In making the presentation, Archdeacons Jim Upton and Suzi Drury noted his tireless commitment to his community as well as his parish, and to wider diocesan ministries, especially with youth. The award is a filigree silver cross on a chain. Heckert later noted that the intertwined design was a symbol of all the people of the diocese and that he shared the award with all his fellow deacons. Canon’s award
Canon to the Ordinary Jo Ann Ford recognized the Rev. Ron Peak, rector of Trinity, El Dorado, for outstanding service by a priest. She noted that in Peak’s short tenure at Trinity, attendance is up, and a number of nontraditional small groups, for such events as movies and square dancing, have added to the life of the community. The award is a bronze canon mounted on a wooden base. Bishop’s chair award Bishop Wolfe presented a rocking chair to three lay people who offered special service in the past year. They are Frank Taylor, St. Thomas, Overland Park; and Doug Anning and Larry Bingham, St. Michael’s, Mission. The bishop noted these three attorneys donated hundreds of hours of legal advice to the diocese during the negotiations for the separation of Christ Church from the Episcopal Church and the diocese. Taylor is chancellor of the diocese, and Anning serves as treasurer. Bingham is a former diocesan treasurer. The award is a wooden rocking chair with the seal of the diocese engraved on the back.
