Seeking and serving Christ in all persons MissionPalooza offers teens the chance to make a diffrence Editor, The Harvest Nearly 90 teenagers from Kansas and West Missouri traded sleeping late and dips in the pool for helping the hungry and others in need during MissionPalooza July 11-16. The joint program of the two dioceses, now in its sixth year, is sponsored by Episcopal Community Services. It gives young people the chance to provide hands-on service to 16 area agencies that serve the poor and needy. What motivates these young people to do such a thing? According to them, it’s service to others and growth in their faith. Mel Kapitan, St. Michael’s, Mission, stood over gallons of steaming soup at the Kansas City Community Kitchen, because, as she said, “It’s a great way to help others in the community. It really opens your eyes.” Samantha Freeman, also of St. Michael’s, worked at a shelter for victims of domestic violence. Of her experience she said, “I like being able to help others who are less fortunate. I take something very spiritual from it.” Several youngsters worked at Harvesters, a large Kansas City food bank. Elisha McCallum, St. Luke’s, Shawnee, said of her time there, “You get to help people and get closer to God.” Phil Anderson, St. Margaret’s, Lawrence, said of his time at MissionPalooza, “It’s a way to put your faith into action.” Michael Penny, also of St. Luke’s, had joined the church just weeks before. He went to MissionPalooza because, he said, “It’s fun to help people.” Sarah Brower, a St. Michael’s member, said, “I like serving other people. I have so much, and here you get to touch the lives of people. They don’t know who we are, but it makes a difference.” |
