The Diocese of Kansas is building a house in Coffeyville in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County. This will help ease a shortage of affordable housing in the Southeast Kansas town caused by devastating floods in the summer of 2007 that wiped out nearly 600 homes. The house is located at 1325 W. 10th St. in Coffeyville. The land (and its preparation for building) was made possible by a donation from the Stephen Rench family. Work is scheduled every Saturday, weather permitting, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To volunteer: Help is needed every week with construction and providing lunch for about 20 workers. To sign up, contact diocesan Habitat liaison Joe Miller at his home (620) 251-8219 or office (620) 251-6967. Leave a message if he's not available when you call. He also can be reached by e-mail. About the house and family: Sherry Freeman and her son, Shawn, are the partner family who will buy the house from Habitat for Humanity through their sweat equity in construction and a no-interest loan. So far the diocese has collected more than $60,000 to help pay the up-front construction costs for this house, with the remainder going toward a second house to be built in partnership with local Habitat for Humanity volunteers.
