NEWS AND OTHER TIMELY INFORMATION

KANSAN SEEKS TO AID KENYAN REFUGEES

An organization started by the Rev. Zane Wilemon, Comfort the Children International, is working to aid refugees from the growing violence in Kenya sparked by the recent presidential election but has escalated into tribal conflict.

Wilemon, a newly ordained priest now serving in California, provides information about the situation currently happening in the country. Read more by clicking here.

He said the most pressing need now is for money to assist refugees who are coming to CTC locations seeking help. Donations may be made online or by sending a check to CTC International, 3210 Mesa Way, Lawrence, KS 66049; mark the memo line "refugee fund."

BISHOP REFUTES "ENDANGERED" ALLEGATION

Bishop Dean E. Wolfe issued a statement Nov. 2 responding to a group that alleged the diocese's headquarters, Bethany Place, was an endangered historical site.

In it he says that this historic piece of property near downtown Topeka has been "meticulously cared for by the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas for nearly 140 years."

A group placed the Bethany Place property on its "endangered" list because of opposition to a proposed parking lot on the site. Read more about the parking lot here.

PRAYERS, DONATIONS SOUGHT FOR FIRE VICTIMS
Bishop Dean E. Wolfe has asked Kansas Episcopalians to assist those hurt by the wildfires in Southern California through prayer and financial support.

Information on the situation in the Diocese of San Diego is available on their web site. Online donations may be made through that site, also.

San Diego Bishop James R. Mathes, a seminary classmate of Bishop Wolfe's, has issued a letter describing the situation in his diocese. You can read it here.

DIOCESAN CONVENTION SHOWS SPIRIT OF UNITY
Meeting under the theme "Casting into deep waters," delegates to the 148th diocesan convention learned, laughed, sang, voted and prayed during the two-day event in Topeka Oct. 19-20.

Bishop Dean Wolfe urged members of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas to engage in deep water spirituality, "Let’s not do anything small," he said. "Let’s not cast into shallow water with weak casts and thin nets, expecting no fish."

BISHOP WOLFE REFLECTS ON THE SEPTEMBER HOUSE OF BISHOPS MEETING
Bishop Dean Wolfe says meetings of the House of Bishops often prompt a Chicken Little response - "The sky is falling!" That didn't hold true when the bishops met in New Orleans in September.

He writes," Yet, once again, the sky is not falling. Chicken Little is wrong. We are largely intact as a denomination, we remain full members of the worldwide Anglican Communion, and we are still faithful disciples and servants of our Lord Jesus Christ."

CLERGY AID COFFEYVILLE FLOOD VICTIMS
The Very Rev. Jerry Adinolfi of St. Paul's, Coffeyville, was among the first people allowed back into flood-damaged sections of Coffeyville on July 11. He and other clergy offered pastoral support to residents seeing their devastated homes for the first time.

STANDING COMMITTEE CONSENTS TO ELECTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA BISHOP
The Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas voted in December to give its consent to the election of the Very Rev. Mark Lawrence as Bishop of South Carolina. Lawrence was re-elected bishop in South Carolina after an earlier election was ruled invalid because an insufficient number of standing committees had consented in the allotted time. Read about the body's vote here.

This vote reverses a decision the body made in December, after Lawrence's first election, in which the body voted to withhold consent. Read the Standing Committee's decision at that time here.
